Bishop’s January 8 Visitation Debrief

On January 8, the First Sunday after the Epiphany: Baptism of Our Lord, God’s Church grew through baptisms, confirmation, reception, and reaffirmation at GSL. During a festive 10:30 a.m. liturgy and packed house of approximately 400 people, seven children and youth became baptized members of the parish, one adult reaffirmed her Episcopal faith, and 26 adults and youth became Episcopalians through confirmation and reception. See photos here.

After preaching at the 8 a.m. liturgy, Bishop Phoebe joined fellowship time in Trezevant Hall until the 9:15 a.m. forum when she shared highlights about ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee, including the hiring of a consultant to spend time with the smaller churches to learn what resources might assist them with growth; formation of a youth advisory team to explore ways to better engage our youngest members; increasingly popular Faithfully Memphis WYXR 91.7 radio show and podcast; January 19 Vital Christian Community workshop at GSL; and encouragement for all parishioners to subscribe to the weekly Diocesan Communicator to stay informed. Bishop Phoebe applauded the commitments of GSL and its members to the diocese, leadership roles, and celebrated our vibrancy of programs and more outlined in The Messenger and Life at GSL Program Guide: Worship, Formation, Community, Music & More, many of which will attend when possible. This made for a rich and full 30-minute session that ended with Q&A time before she met with the candidates in the Chapel to become better acquainted with them.

After the 10:30 liturgy, the Fellowship Committee hosted a great party for Bishop Phoebe and the candidates in Trezevant Hall. In a hurting world that desperately needs healing and hope, it is incredible, encouraging, and worth celebrating that GSL is thriving, thanks to all who make up the body of Christ in this corner of God’s Kingdom.
