A Message from the Curate, The Rev. Meredith Jane Day
regarding June 2020 Transition from GSL to Cincinnati
Dear GSL Friends,
I’m writing to share with you some bittersweet news. As many of you know, this past year has been one of great discernment for me and my fiancé, Jackson Hearn. As a 4th year medical student at UTHSC, Jackson has spent the past several months interviewing at residency programs across the country. The process has been exciting, but difficult. We have been trying to determine the right fit for us, while also knowing the final decision was up to the “match” process. We submitted our list. The programs submitted their list. And ultimately the magic of a computer algorithm determined the fate for all 4th year medical students nationwide. This past Friday, Jackson and I received the news that he had been matched to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Cincinnati. This news brought us a mix of emotions. We are thrilled that Jackson will have the chance to train at one of the finest programs in the country, and I’m thankful that the Diocese of Southern Ohio is a vibrant setting full of new opportunities. Of course, we are also tremendously sad to leave this beautiful city and community that we have come to call home.
When I moved to Memphis three years ago to be close to Jackson, I had absolutely no idea of the blessing I was about to receive. During this time, I’ve fallen head-over-heels with this place: a city of grit-and-grind passion and a parish community of unbelievable generosity, full of some of the best folks I’ve ever known. You made me a priest and for that I will never be able to fully express my gratitude.
All of this is made even more difficult in our current situation of physical distancing. My prayer is that we will all be together again very soon, and that I will experience the pleasure of seeing each of you at our wedding on June 13th at Calvary Episcopal Church downtown. We can’t know for sure what the future will hold, but I hope you will go ahead and “save the date” to celebrate with us on that day. (More details are available at www.meredithandjackson.com)
I will have more to share about my plans for life and ministry in Cincinnati later, but know for now that I will continue my work as your curate through June. My ordination vows remind me that transition is a part of the vocation of the priesthood, and I covet your prayers during this time of change for all of us. I ask your prayers as well for Ollie+ as he continues his diligent search for the next new priest to be among you at Grace-St. Luke’s.
