"THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS" BY BARBARA VISER
In 1990, on the 50th anniversary of the merger of Grace Church and St. Luke's Church, the parish published Grace-St. Luke's: the First Fifty Years. In addition to offering an exhaustive history of the combined parish, the book is also rich in detail about the century of history each parish enjoyed before the merger.
To check out Grace-St. Luke's: The First Fifty Years from the church library or find out how you can get your own copy, contact the church office at 272-7245 or by email.
You may also download a pdf. Please note: Divided into 3 parts because of large file size.
"THE HISTORY OF GRACE CHURCH: 1852-1940" BY MARTHA WHARTON JONES
In the late 1970s, the parish and vestry of Grace-St. Luke's undertook an history project that began with a comprehensive history of Grace Church. Martha Wharton Jones, with editing assistance from Dr. Henry Hall Peyton, III, was selected to write the book and -- in 1980 -- the 65-pageGrace Church: 1852-1940 was published.
The book is remarkably researched and a wonderful read for anyone interested in the early history of our parish. Few copies exist today, but the short book can be downloaded by clicking here: Grace Church: 1852-1940.
1921 MESSENGER
We were delighted to get our hands on this 1921 Messenger that was found by parishioner Mike Davis at a yard sale. You can read it here! Have things changed much in 100 years??
GSL MUSIC, 1942
When Debbie Smith was serving as interim before my arrival, she was gratefully going through files, music, and books that had been left in the office by at least four former directors of music. She came across a 78rpm record. On one side of it was a recording of “O come, all ye faithful” by the GSL choir on Christmas Eve of 1942. On the other side were two Bach Organ Chorales with the name of a famous organist written under it, E. Power Biggs. E. Power Biggs was perhaps the most famous and widely known organists of his generation. We’ve tried to find more information about this possible trip to Memphis but have found very little except these two Bach Chorales. Debbie took this record and had it digitized. We’ve made the recordings available by clicking below. -Dr. Patrick A. Scott, Director of Music & Organist
