Much has been going on with regard to Christian Education in the past few weeks! Without further ado, I bring you the list of offerings for the Sunday Christian Education time. Know that throughout the year, other offerings will be added to the schedule.

Rector's Forum

Spiritual Practices

The Rev. Richard Lawson will lead the Rector’s Forum again along with special guests throughout the year.

It promises to be a thoughtful and creative class, with an eye toward encouraging everyone to make meaningful connections between scripture and the daily grind of ordinary life. 

 


Upcoming topics for the Winter include:

  • Jan. 8: Good Balance in Prayer with the Rev. Richard Lawson 
  • Jan. 15: Light and Darkness, Silence and Sound in Prayer with the Rev. Richard Lawson 
  • Jan. 22:  Intentional Spirituality with Heidi Clark  Heidi is the Director of Consultant Services and the Coordinator for Adult Education for LeaderResources. She also provides J2A training, education consulting and conference leadership. 
  • Jan. 29: Faith & Medicine with Dr. Larry Whitlock 
  • Feb. 5: Identity, Discernment, Practice, and Transformation with the Rev. Mike Ehmer of CREDO 
  • Feb. 12: Always We Begin Again: The Benedictine Way of Living with John Mcquiston*
  • Feb. 19: The Holy Spirit in The Hymnal 1982: A Sing Along with Wesley Emerson and the GSL Choir

*John McQuiston, an experienced commercial litigator and general counsel to two e-commerce companies,  is also a best-selling author. His book "Always We Begin Again: The Benedictine Way of Living" was written about Mr. McQuiston’s journey for a more profound connection with the spiritual life, which in turn, led him to the Benedictine’s door. 

 

Lenten Series with Dr. Stephen Haynes of Rhodes College

  • Feb. 26: The Bible and Slavery, with special attention to the pro-slavery argument developed by American Christians in Genesis 9-11
  • Mar. 4: The Christian ‘teaching of contempt’ for Jews and its roots and antidotes in Scripture
  • Mar. 11: No Sunday School:  Spring Break 
  • Mar. 18: Bonhoeffer as a case study in coming to terms with and revising Christian theology with regard to Jews
  • Mar. 25: Contemporary issues regarding Scriptural interpretation
Stephen R. Haynes holds a Ph.D. in Religion and Literature from Emory University, the M. Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary, an M. A. from Florida State University, and a B. A. from Vanderbilt University. Professor Haynes has been at Rhodes since 1989 and offers courses on the Holocaust, religion and racism, and religion and literature.  

 

All ages welcome. Class starts at 9:30 a.m.
