From the Rev. Richard Lawson
concerning the summer renovation project:
One of the questions I keep in mind is, "What does Grace-St. Luke’s look like from the viewpoint of a visitor?" In the Bible and the Christian tradition, the visitor is to be received as if he or she is Christ himself. With this question of what a newcomer sees walking through our space, the Vestry appointed a Space Committee to review various spaces of the Church. This committee is chaired by Karen Clark (a Vestry member) and includes a balance of members from the Vestry (including wardens) and the Buildings & Grounds Committee (including the chair of B&G, Tim Bolding).
We have wonderful news. Over the summer, we will renovate many areas of the parish, including Trezevant, the main floor bathrooms, Sunday School rooms, PDO, and several other spaces. Note that the Church itself is not being renovated. Our architect guiding this project is from Askew Nixon Ferguson, a firm that has done significant work in Episcopal Churches and at GSL School. On behalf of the Finance Committee, I also want to highlight that we have existing funds in place to pay for this renovation; there will not be a capital campaign, nor will these projects affect the operating budget.
I know that you will want to know a lot more about this renovation and what it means for this summer. With that in mind, the Space Committee will host parish meetings at 9:30 a.m. on three Sundays in June: June 12, June 19, and June 26. At these meetings, we will present the overall scope of the project, talk about how we are paying for it, and answer any questions you may have. We will also cover in these meetings what groups will have to move temporarily during the renovation. In the meantime, stay tuned for more information and spread the word about all the good things going on at Grace-St. Luke’s and, above all, the good news of God’s love.
Faithfully,
Richard Lawson
Rector
