GSL Outreach Funding Allocated More Than $40,000 in 2009

February 1st, 2010

Church

Throughout last year, the Outreach Committee made grants to various local charities in furtherance of our mission "To know Christ and to make Christ known." The Outreach Committee attempts to do this by making donations to organizations that keep the admonishment of Matthew 25:35 in mind: "to feed the hungry, clothe and shelter the needy, care for the sick and visit the imprisoned." We also attempt to donate to organizations that will provide hands-on opportunities for parishioners.

Outreach was allotted $46,422.00 (which represents approximately 4% of GSL’s budget). Of this, $3,600.00 was provided to the clergy for their discretionary use and $4,290.00 was earmarked to pay for security for More Than A Meal on Sundays. This left us with approximately $38,532.00 for grants. Overall, we received funding requests of almost $100,000.00. The following grants were made:

  • Church Health Center $5,500.00
  • Door of Hope $3,000.00
  • Emmanuel Episcopal Center $3,000.00
  • Exchange Family Club $3,000.00
  • Jacob’s Ladder $3,519.50
  • Memphis Child Advocacy Center $3,000.00
  • MIFA $4,500.00
  • Samaritan Counseling Center $3,000.00
  • United Housing $4,000.00
  • W. Tennessee Haiti Partnership $3,000.00
  • Food Pantry $1,000.00
  • Dance Works $812.50
  • Support for Diocesan’s missionaries in Africa (Heidi and Monica) $1,200.00

As mentioned above, the requests for funding we received exceeded our budget by over $60,000. Obviously, the need is still there. Donations to these organizations are both encouraged and appreciated.
