Many of you may remember someone who was especially particular about the attractiveness of our grounds. At all times of the year, she could be found plucking a weed, adjusting a planter, or taking the time to pick up a bit of litter.
Katherine Hinds Smythe was a devoted member of our parish for more than 60 years. After her marriage to Hamilton “Ham” Smythe III in 1954, she was convinced to leave her beloved Methodist church in Tupelo and join Grace-St. Luke’s. Tupelo’s loss was Memphis’ gain. Mrs. Smythe served Grace-St. Luke’s in countless roles, including as one of the first female members of the vestry and as a member of the school board. She was dedicated to the greater Memphis community, taking leadership positions in many civic and philanthropic organizations—all while running a successful business and raising three children, W. Hamilton Smythe IV, Katie Smythe Gould, and Stanley Clay Smythe.
Inspired by her love of our church landscape, the family of Katherine Hinds Smythe has given generously to create the Grace-St. Luke’s Garden Guild Fund. Monies from this fund are specifically earmarked for the future care of our new landscaping around the church. We invite you to join the Smythes in preserving and beautifying our landscape by contributing your memorial and other gifts to the Garden Guild Fund.
Thank you, Smythe family, for your generosity and for helping to ensure that our garden continues to grow for years to come. We at Grace-St. Luke’s are so grateful for the visionary and generous gifts that sustain and enhance the life of our parish.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for all the generosity, skill, and talent that has created this space, a quiet oasis, part of the coming and going of life around our Church, but also a space set aside for people to sit, to think, and to remember. As we look at the names inscribed here, we recall faces, personalities, fun times, and sad times. Lord, we ask for your peace and blessing on them all. Grant all who come here the peace and serenity of knowing your presence and make this a special place of peace and hope. Amen.
