Father Lawson Shares the Message of Ash Wednesday with the City of Memphis
March 9th, 2011
Grace-St. Luke's Rector Richard Lawson was interviewed this morning by the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the video of his thoughts -- along with footage of the school community Ash Wednesday service -- was posted on the newspaper's website this afternoon.
Father Lawson described the ancient ritual of the Imposition of the Ashes, and then took a few moments to share some thoughts on the power of the service.
"Ash Wednesday," he said, "is a service in which God says to us, almost like a child or a friend who speaks to us out of love, telling us the truth... God says to us, 'You can be more'... And in that sense, Ash Wednesday and repentance are about becoming yourself -- a kind of true self that we know ourselves to be in the presence of love."
The video is a beautiful depiction of this special observance.
You can watch it at the Commerical Appeal's website.
