August 15th, 2009

Moloney

The Rev. John Moloney will be the first to receive the St. Martin de Porres Award posthumously for his work in the Memphis area.

St. Martin de Porres was a member of the Dominican Order who lived in 17th century Peru. A target of prejudice because of his mixed racial ancestry, he is the patron saint of social justice and healing, as well as being the patron saint of the Southern Dominican Province.

The St. Martin de Porres Shrine, dedicated to his memory and works, is located at St. Peter Catholic Church in downtown Memphis. The St. Martin de Porres Award is presented to an individual or an organization who serves in the community in the spirit of St. Martin de Porres.

Others receiving the award this year are Mr. Lance Forsdick and Dr. Mary McDonald, superintendent of the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Memphis.

Two events will allow individuals to recognize these pillars of the community. A cocktail buffet and silent auction will be held Thursday, October 1, at the Hunt-Phelan Inn. For tickets, call Fr. John Pitzer at 901-527-8282.

The award will be given at St. Martin’s Feast Day Celebration Mass on Tuesday, November 3, at 6:30 PM at St. Peter Catholic Church, 190 Adams Avenue in downtown Memphis.

All are welcome.
